lunch 9 : call for submissions

AYAC supports lunch - the UVa School of Architecture's design journal - see details of submitting your work below!

The editors of lunch are excited to welcome the submission of abstracts and articles for our upcoming journal, lunch9: In Excess. We encourage you to read the call (below) and consider how your research and projects could contribute to the conversation.

lunch9: In Excess

Excess is everywhere — it is plenty; profit; waste. Growth cannot occur without excess, yet there is a threshold beyond which growth becomes malignant. Nothing succeeds like excess, yet necessity — scarcity — is the mother of invention. We encounter this duality constantly; how we react defines us collectively as a society and individually as creators and agents of change.

How do we measure, or decide, what is — in quantity or quality — excessive? Are traditional constraints — the actualities of material, labor, technology, and permanence — still at work? Is excess valuable; is it beautiful; is it productive? When and how does excess lead to innovation, or stifle it?

What is design in excess?
We seek ideas, papers, and projects — design and product proposals; visual narratives, critical mappings, and diagrams; experiments, interviews, critiques, etc. —  addressing excess from all perspectives.

Abstracts are due November 15. Full projects and final articles are due January 17

Abstracts should be ~350 words, detailing your proposal and the projected length of your piece along with a CV and work sample. The written component of full projects should be no more than 4000 words. Please see our website for full submission guidelines, and visit lunchdesignjournal.submittable.com/submit to submit.

Please don't hesitate to contact info@uvalunch.com, or us individually, with questions or to discuss your ideas. Many thanks to all who submit — we can't wait to hear from you!

DC CANstruction - National Building Museum 8/31-9/07

The annual CANstruction event will be taking place at the National Building Museum this year, from August 31st to September 7th.  The design competition allows local firms to show off their prowess building with canned goods while benefiting the Capital Area Food Bank as all of the food will be donated after the event.

AYAC's own Kathleen Smith is competing with her firm Michael Baker Jr. this year with their version of Diller Scofidio + Renfro's addition for the Hirshhorn Musuem.

You can participate in the event by visiting the museum during the first week of September, or by donating money to the Capital Area Food Bank on behalf any of the teams.  Donations go directly to the food bank and do not cover the cost of each team's structure, but donations do act as votes in the People's Choice Award, one of the categories this year.  Please use the links below for more information and to donate:

Hands on DC - Work a Thon Recap

Our first AYAC service event, with Hands on DC at Jefferson Middle School, was quite the success.  With a handful of UVa Alums in tow, we got a lot of work done alongside an amazing number of volunteers from all over DC.

Here is a shot of the team preparing the fence for paint. We spent the early part of the day
removing the rust that covered most of the chain link before we started rolling.

Sara Allen Harper and Christoph Wilhelm covered a lot of ground with their mad painting
skills, HoDC provided some great shirts to splatter with paint.

Christoph Wilhelm (Arch '10) , Avery (honorary young alumnus), Kathleen Smith
(AYAC, Arch '12) and Sara Allen Harper (AYAC, Arch '11) .

Christoph brought his friend Avery to help us turn the fence magenta, and enjoy a pizza lunch in the school's cafeteria.  We were forced to take our break just before noon when it started to rain in earnest on us.  Luckily it cleared up while we ate so that we could finish the last sections of the fence.

The finished product!

Overall the fence looked a lot more welcoming at the end of the day without the rust and weeds.  Despite the rain, the whole day was great fun and well worth it when we got to hear from a Jefferson student and his principle about what our small offering means to the school and its students.

Stay tuned for more 13 in '13 events with the AYAC!
