Boneyard Studios, founded 2012 in the District of Columbia, is a showcase of tiny houses on wheels with a mission to demonstrate creative urban infill, promote the benefits of tiny houses, support other tiny house builders, and model what a tiny house community could look like.

AYAC DC+Baltimore, along with 30 of our closest young alumni friends, celebrated successes and failures of our ranks Thursday night as part of the ongoing 20/20 series: Winners and Losers. The authors Gaston Dietz, Melissa Elliot, David Duxbury, and Sara Allen Harper, presented a range of academic, post-grad, professional or independent projects and competition entries. Excess is everywhere — it is plenty; profit; waste. Growth cannot occur without excess, yet there is a threshold beyond which growth becomes malignant. Nothing succeeds like excess, yet necessity — scarcity — is the mother of invention. We encounter this duality constantly; how we react defines us collectively as a society and individually as creators and agents of change.
How do we measure, or decide, what is — in quantity or quality — excessive? Are traditional constraints — the actualities of material, labor, technology, and permanence — still at work? Is excess valuable; is it beautiful; is it productive? When and how does excess lead to innovation, or stifle it?
